The Intermediate Rider Training (also known as IRT, formerly called BRC2) is designed for returning riders with riding experience (90 or more days and/or 3,000 or more miles) to take a 1-day training course on smaller sized training motorcycles. More experienced, seasoned riders, can sign-up for this class to fine-tune techniques and mental skills needed for survival in traffic.

What is involved in the Intermediate Rider Training?

During this one-day course there is a classroom portion to discuss risk awareness and management, preparing to ride (bike and rider), safer street strategies, lane positioning, visibility, cornering, maximum braking, common riding situations and scenarios, such as passengers and cargo, night riding, hills and swerving, and the effects of alcohol and other drugs on riding. We end the classroom portion with a knowledge test.

Through the nine range exercises, you will practice techniques of shifting and stopping, blending of controls, managing traction, cornering, swerving and stopping quickly. The course ends with an optional skills evaluation that will waive any DOL testing to add a motorcycle endorsement on your Washington State license.

Do I qualify to take the Intermediate Rider Training?

Students must have adequate prior experience operating a motorcycle. The first riding exercise will be used to evaluate and screen the students. If a student does not possess minimum riding abilities (starting, stopping, shifting gears and turning) they will not be allowed to continue the course. Students who are dismissed are not entitled to a refund of their tuition.

How much does the Intermediate Rider Training cost?

The IRT is $150 and includes the use of our motorcycles and helmets.

Students must provide:

• A parental permission form if under the age of 18
• US DOT compliant helmet (small supply is available)
• Eye protection (glasses, goggles or face shield)
• Long sleeve shirt or jacket
• Long pants
• Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear
• Full-fingered riding gloves
• Appropriate rain gear, sunglasses, snacks & drinks, etc., for weather conditions during your class.

3. For your convenience you may use your Visa or Mastercard over the phone or in person at our office to secure your spot.
4. You will receive a confirmation letter (receipt) prior to your course start date with the appropriate information including directions.

Where can I buy the riding gear that I need?

We recommend that you check out our list of supporting dealerships found on our links page. Each one carries a full line of protective gear and has knowledgeable staff that would be very happy to help you start your riding experience in the right direction.

Will I get a lunch break?

Throughout the IRT you will be given breaks for drinks or snacks however there will not be time to leave the range to grab lunch. So please come prepared with plenty of fluids and snacks to keep you going throughout the day.

Do I need my own motorcycle?

The IRT does not require you to bring your own motorcycle. We provide training motorcycles (many loaned to us at no expense by the local dealers - please check out our supporting dealerships) for your use.

Will I still have to take a test with the DOL to earn my endorsement?

No, if you successfully complete the IRT, by passing our written and skills evaluation, and receive a completion card, you have 180 days from the completion date of your course to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. However you will be required to pay the DOL fee to have the endorsement added to your license. To keep your endorsement at license renewal time you will also need to renew your endorsement each time.

I do not have a WA drivers license. Can I use the completion card to put a motorcycle endorsement on my other states drivers license?

Some states will honor our Washington Motorcycle Safety Program completion card as a way to get your endorsement added to your license, however, some states will not. Please check with the Department of Licensing from your state to verify what requirements are necessary. You can always get a Washington State Drivers License and have the endorsement added if you need.

Why are you so booked out?

The IRT is becoming a popular course and we do everything we can to keep classes available within 30 days however, with the lack of daylight hours we are limited in the number of classes we can run each day.

How can I get in sooner?

There are a couple ways to get in sooner. You may show up to any training date and if a student does not show for their class you may take their spot. Be prepared to fill out a registration form and make payment regardless if you are registered for another class. You will be refunded once the paperwork reaches our office.

Another option is to buy your own private class. What this means is you would pay for 6 student spots and we would work around your schedule and get you trained at your convenience. Since you have paid for those spots feel free to invite your family or friends to take it with you.

Do you have any cancellations?

Every day we hear this question. We do not know when a cancellation will happen and are unable to keep a wait list due to the high demand. It is recommended to sign up in the next available spot and then call periodically asking for these possible spots.

I am under the age of 18 what should I know?

As an under 18 year old you either need to have a parent/guardian at the beginning of the class to sign a waiver form, or, contact the office to get a waiver to be notarized prior to class. The IRT will allow you to get your motorcycle endorsement.

Is there anything I can do to get ready for the IRT?

If you have taken time off from your bike (i.e. winter months) or, if you are riding a new bike, consider spending time riding prior to your class. You will want to make sure you are comfortable with balance and lean before taking your class. Consider riding a bicycle a few times before class. It will help with balance, control, and health conditioning.
