Motorcycle Licensing

Common Questions

Do I need a special license to ride a motorcycle in Washington?

Yes. A drivers license with a special endorsement is required in order to operate a motorcycle on public roads in Washington.

Does the motorcycle endorsement cover all motorcycles?

No. There are two types of motorcycle endorsements. One covers two-wheeled motorcycles, the other covers three-wheeled (i.e. trikes, sidecars) motorcycles.

How do I get a motorcycle endorsement?

You must take two tests. One test is a written/knowledge test. The other is a skills/riding test on a motorcycle.

Is there an option for a learning permit?

Yes. If you are 18 years of age or older you can take the written test. Upon successfully passing the written test you can apply for your learners permit at a Department of Licensing office. The learners permit has restrictions and is only valid for a short period of time.

If you are under the age of 18 you are required by Washington state law to successfully complete an approved training course in order to get your motorcycle endorsement.

Do I have to take a training course?

Maybe. If you are under the age of 18 you are required to complete an approved training course in order to obtain your motorcycle endorsement.

If you are at least 18 years old, have your own motorcycle, and already ride on the street then you can skip the training and just complete the testing.
